Metal vs. Shingle Roofs in Alabama
Metal or architectural shingles? An honest comparison of cost, lifespan, hail, heat, and noise for Alabama homes from a Lincoln roofer.

The short answer
Both are good roofs. Architectural shingles cost less up front and are the most common roof in East Alabama. Metal costs more, lasts longer, and sheds storms better. Which one is right depends on how long you'll own the house and what you can spend now.
Up-front cost
Shingles are the lower-cost roof to install. Standing seam metal is typically the most expensive; exposed-fastener panel metal falls between the two. We price both on the same estimate so you can compare.
Lifespan
A quality architectural shingle roof commonly lasts 20 to 30 years in Alabama heat. Metal roofs commonly last 40 years or more. If you plan to stay in the house, metal's lifespan narrows the cost gap.
Hail and wind
Metal handles wind very well and doesn't lose granules. Large hail can dent it, which is mostly cosmetic. Shingles can bruise or crack from hail, which shortens their life. Impact-rated shingles are an option in between.
Heat and energy
Metal reflects more sun, especially in lighter colors, and can keep the attic cooler. Good attic ventilation matters more than roof type for comfort.
Noise
With solid decking and underlayment, a metal roof on a house is not much louder than shingles. The loud metal roofs people remember are usually on open-framed barns.
What we recommend
Short-term ownership or a tight budget: architectural shingles. Long-term home, shop, or barn: get a metal price. Either way, we'll install it as a TAMKO EDGE certified contractor and tell you the truth about your current roof.
